I have a traditional sofa-bed, which is very unpleasant. I saw a series of shape-memory replacement mattress online offerings are part of an air mattress, or simply do so, as more than a conventional mattress.
I am afraid that the bed is uncomfortable mainly because the support from the bed and no matter how good a mattress I will be even more uncomfortable.

we put a futon mattress with us, really well prepared
A soft mattress will certainly help. Sofa has never been my favorite.
